This painting marks one of my very first explorations with oil sticks layered over acrylic paint, and I can still feel the excitement of discovery when I look at it.
The composition began with broad acrylic forms in bold, solid colours — deep reds, brighter reds, yellows, greens and blues — balanced with softer taupes and beiges, all resting on an aqua background. As the painting evolved, botanical shapes quietly emerged along one side: pink bud-like forms with green leaves reaching upward, perhaps inspired by the arrival of spring here at home, or perhaps simply by my lifelong love of gardens and growing things.
I also found myself returning to repeated patterns throughout the piece, inspired in part by memories of Australia and the rhythmic beauty of Australian Indigenous artworks. A small yellow sun hovers near the top of the painting, quietly watching over the larger forms below.
What transformed the work most dramatically, however, was the addition of oil sticks over top of the dried acrylic surface. The oil softened the edges of the bold shapes and introduced a tactile, almost velvety quality to the painting. I love how the texture remains visible, allowing every mark and gesture to speak openly. The colours feel both vibrant and gentle at once.
To me, this painting carries a feeling of joy and calm simultaneously. It was a deeply satisfying piece to create, and it opened the door to an entirely new way of working for me.
Please note:because oil sticks require an extended curing time, this painting will not be ready to ship until September 2026. I want to ensure the surface is fully cured before carefully packaging it for transport, so that it arrives safely and beautifully in its new home.
