Soft blue-grays give this painting a quiet, almost hazy feeling. There is an abstract shape that might be a person sitting on the edge of the water, out in the sun—or perhaps it is simply a shape that our minds turn into something familiar.
For me, it brings back memories of childhood afternoons by the water, when my mum would insist that I put on sunscreen before I could go back outside. It’s funny how small details can remain with us for decades: the feeling of warm skin, the water nearby, the particular light of a summer afternoon, and a mother’s familiar voice.
I think those are some of the beginnings I’m interested in with this collection—not only the beginning of a painting, but the beginning of memory. The things we experience early in life continue to travel with us, sometimes quietly reappearing in unexpected places.
