There is something wonderfully fleeting about the first days of summer. The light feels soft, the colours are fresh, and suddenly there is the sense that the whole season is still ahead of us. Picking Wild Strawberries grew from that feeling—a quiet anticipation of long days, warm sunshine and the simple pleasures that come with summer.
I’ve always loved looking for wild berries, and especially the first strawberries of the season. There’s something almost childlike about wandering through the landscape, searching for those tiny red treasures and eating them as you go. I brought some of that feeling into this painting, using soft colours and expressive marks to create something that feels less like a specific place and more like a memory of summer itself.
