There were long stretches during the Atlantic crossing when the horizon dissolved into a single, uninterrupted field of blue. Sea and sky seemed to merge, and the depth of the ocean became impossible not to think about. In the Deep grew out of those moments of quiet curiosity—wondering what lay beneath us, how far down the water reached, and what unseen worlds moved below the surface as we sailed on.
This small painting leans into darker, layered blues, built up thickly and then interrupted by fine scraped lines that suggest movement just out of view. Creating those marks felt instinctive, almost like tracing currents or hidden paths through the paint. The piece holds a sense of stillness, but also mystery—a reminder of how vast and unknowable the ocean can feel when you are surrounded by it on all sides.
