This painting came from a place of accumulation rather than intention. It was made while I was absorbing difficult information, layered with memories tied to places that have shaped me deeply over time. Some of those places live close to my earliest years, and even from a distance, they continue to carry emotional presence.
The work unfolded quickly, guided by instinct. Bold colors and decisive brushstrokes became a way of holding and moving that weight through the surface. Although the painting is abstract, a subtle suggestion of the human form emerged on its own—a neck, shoulders, a torso—something upright and grounded. It wasn’t planned, and it remains understated, visible only if you spend time looking.
Within the context of LINGER, A Familiar Weight reflects how memory settles into the body. Certain concerns, attachments, and affections don’t disappear; they stay with us, shaping how we stand and how we move forward. There is tension here, but also steadiness—a sense of presence that comes from acknowledging what we carry, rather than pushing it away.
