From corporate deadlines to creative freedom – my life as a working artist

Back in the early 2000s, my days were filled with client meetings, design briefs, and the rhythm of corporate life. As a graphic designer in Montreal, I was immersed in the structured world of marketing and communications. It was comfortable, predictable—until it wasn’t. When my job was suddenly no longer mine, I faced an unexpected fork in the road. What at first felt like a loss quickly transformed into an opportunity—one that led me to the life I have now, as a full-time artist.

Here's a photo of me, back in 2011, when I still worked in the corporate world:

I often think about that moment of transition, how uncertain it felt at the time. But looking back, I see it as the best thing that could have happened to me. Art has given me something that my corporate job never could: freedom. The freedom to create on my own terms, to collaborate with incredible companies worldwide, and most importantly, to travel.

A life on the move

Travel fuels my creativity. I draw inspiration from the colors, textures, and energy of different places. Just recently, I led a group of artists on a retreat in Costa Rica—an experience that combined two of my greatest passions: painting and exploring. There’s something magical about creating art in a new environment, surrounded by like-minded people, soaking in the beauty of nature. It reminded me why I chose this path in the first place: the ability to shape my own life, to chase inspiration wherever it leads me.

Art beyond the canvas

One of the most exciting parts of my career is seeing my art take on new forms beyond traditional paintings. Licensing has become a big part of what I do, allowing my work to reach people in ways I never imagined. I’ve collaborated with companies as far away as Australia, and every time a new product sample arrives at my door, I feel like a kid at Christmas. Seeing my artwork printed on home decor, accessories, and other beautifully crafted items never gets old. It’s a thrill every single time.

I've had the privilege to work with so many amazing companies. Here is a spread in the Designer Boys catalog including some of my works in 2024.

The Claire Desjardins collection

Perhaps the most personal extension of my artwork is my signature line of women’s apparel. The Claire Desjardins Collection is sold in boutiques across the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. Twice a year, we release new collections—Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter—each one infused with vibrant colors and expressive patterns.

Here I am in one of the beautiful, 100% silk kimonos inspired by my painting titled Return of an Old Friend.

I work closely with designers in my hometown of Montreal, who source high-quality materials from around the world. This season, I’m especially excited about our new silk kimonos and scarves. There’s something about the way my art moves on silk that feels so right—it’s fluid, feminine, and luxurious. I’ve always loved natural fibers, and we’re continuing to shift toward using fewer synthetics, prioritizing quality and sustainability.

Art as a Way of Life

What I love most about all of this is the idea that people can experience my art in so many ways. Whether it’s a painting hanging in a gallery, a flowing silk kimono, or a beautifully designed home accessory, my work is out in the world, bringing joy to people in their everyday lives. And that, to me, is what art is all about.

I never imagined that losing my job would lead me here. But life has a way of surprising us, and I’m grateful every day that I took the leap into the unknown. This journey has been colorful, unpredictable, and full of adventure—just the way I like it.
