Finding my canvas in change
Life, much like art, often takes us through unexpected turns and hues. My journey from the structured world of graphic design to the liberating realm of abstract art is a tale of transformation, resilience, and discovery.
As a graphic designer in Montreal's vibrant web design industry, I thrived in a world of pixels and deadlines. The bustling head office of a large marketing firm was my canvas, where creativity met commerce. But as it happens in the corporate world, changes came - our small firm was absorbed, and eventually, I found myself outside those familiar walls, package in hand, heart heavy.
In those moments of uncertainty, the familiar comfort of my team's camaraderie felt like a lost artwork. Yet, as an artist at heart, I knew that every blank canvas holds potential. It was time to pick up a different set of tools - not the mouse and keyboard, but brushes and acrylic paints.
The leap into abstract art
Why not market myself, I thought, as I had helped countless others? With this newfound resolve, I embarked on a journey into the uncharted territory of abstract art. This was no mere change of profession; it was a profound shift in expression. Abstract art allowed me to communicate in colors and forms, transcending the limitations of conventional design.
My first strokes were cautious, yet filled with an eagerness to explore. I found solace in the swirls of paint, the freedom of each brushstroke. Gradually, what started as an experiment evolved into a passionate pursuit.
Collaboration and recognition
The universe has a way of aligning with our aspirations. My work, a blend of passion and perseverance, caught the eye of Anthropologie, a milestone that marked the beginning of an exciting collaboration. This partnership not only validated my art but also broadened my horizon, connecting my work with a wider audience.
Beyond this, my art started finding its way into galleries, each exhibition a step further in my journey. The transition from a digital screen to gallery walls was surreal. Seeing my abstract creations resonate with others has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career.
Support and growth
Behind every artist is a support system, and I've been fortunate to have the unwavering support of my husband. Post his own career milestone of selling his company, he chose to invest his time and energy in my artistic endeavor. His belief in me has been a cornerstone in my journey, transforming me from a project into a thriving artist.
Looking ahead
Today, as I stand amidst my paintings, each a splash
of color and emotion, I reflect on this journey. It's a path marked not by a straight line, but by a vibrant spectrum of experiences. From the precision of graphic design to the expressive freedom of abstract art, every step has shaped me.
This journey isn’t just about changing careers; it's about embracing the unknown and finding beauty in it. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to the most rewarding destinations.
As my work travels across the globe, finding a place in both homes and businesses, I remain grounded in the joy of creation. My story is a testament to the power of resilience and the magic that happens when we dare to follow our true colors.
I invite you, through my art, to take a moment, to pause and ponder. Let the colors and forms speak to you in their unique language. This isn’t just my journey; it’s an invitation to explore your own paths, your own untapped potentials.
To those standing at the crossroads of change, uncertain of the path ahead, I say: embrace the uncertainty, for it is the canvas of possibility. Just as a brush meets the canvas in a dance of colors, so too can your dreams meet reality in a beautiful confluence of fate and effort.
As I continue to collaborate, create, and share my art, I look forward to each new chapter. Thank you for being a part of this journey, for every splash of paint is not just mine, but a shared experience of growth and discovery.
With color and curiosity,
xo Claire

I sooo relate to your story. With similar details, I, too, went from advertising art and graphic design to abstract painting. I still think as a designer when approaching a canvas. Thanks for relating your story.
