Colors of Costa Rica art retreat: re-cap and artist review

Our recent art retreat in Costa Rica was an unforgettable journey of creativity, exploration, and connection. With 15 participants in total, including 11 artists and a few accompanying partners, our group became a close-knit family during the week we spent together.

A stunning setting for creativity

Based in the stunning El Castillo boutique hotel, perched above the ocean, we were surrounded by lush tropical beauty. Every morning began with art sessions in an open, airy setting where I demonstrated various techniques including collage, abstract layering, and brushwork.

It was inspiring to see each participant interpret these methods in their own way, creating deeply personal and vibrant pieces.

Exploring Costa Rica’s natural wonders

Beyond the studio, we ventured into Costa Rica's breathtaking natural reserves. Highlights included:

  • Corcovado National Park: Observing a sleeping tapir up close, hearing its rhythmic breathing, and watching its ears twitch as it dreamed
  • Manuel Antonio Park: Encountering two- and three-toed sloths
  • Tarcoles Crocodile Bridge: Spotting crocodiles in their natural habitat
  • Scarlet macaws in flight
  • Toucans perched on branches
  • Iguanas, agoutis, and playful monkeys
These experiences were a vivid reminder of the incredible biodiversity Costa Rica offers.

Participant testimonial

Linda Sutherland, an attendee from Montreal, shared her thoughts:

"When I read Claire’s Instagram post about an art and ecotourism retreat in Costa Rica I signed up immediately. Having been in an artistic rut for several years, I was eager—with Claire’s help—to rediscover the joy of creating art. The trip exceeded my expectations in every way. Claire is such an enthusiastic and talented artist, and she generously shared an array of creative techniques, offering each participant her constructive feedback.

Our accommodations—in El Castillo, a lovely boutique hotel overlooking the ocean—were superb, as were the meals. Our group of 15 occupied all of the rooms, creating a warm family ambiance. The week was perfectly organized, with morning art sessions and excursions to several of the country’s amazing nature reserves, where knowledgeable guides helped us view some of the fascinating creatures living there.

The trip was incredibly well organized and offered tremendous value. Absolutely everything was included, from the delicious meals to the art supplies, entrance and guide fees at the reserves, and an unforgettable all-day excursion to the Corcovado National Park. What an amazing week of painting and discovery!"

As I reflect on our time in Costa Rica, I’m reminded of the magic that happens when art, nature, and community come together. This retreat was more than just a creative getaway—it was a transformative experience where friendships were formed, artistic voices were rediscovered, and inspiration flowed from every brushstroke and jungle path.

The energy, enthusiasm, and deep connections forged during our week together are what make these retreats so special. I’m beyond grateful for each participant who joined me on this journey and brought their own unique perspective to our shared adventure!
