'HOW TO' PACKING GUIDE, PART 1: step-by-step guide to packing artworks on paper

Red, green and blue abstract painting by artist / painter Claire Desjardins.

As an artist, I understand that each painting is more than just a blend of colors and strokes; it's a part of us that we send out into the world. Whether it’s a vibrant work on paper, a canvas rolled in a tube, or a painting still hugging its frame, ensuring that our art reaches its destination safely is as important as the creative process itself. Here's a simple, yet effective guide on how to pack paintings for shipping, tailored for works on paper.

Works on paper: preserving delicacy

Materials needed:

  • Acid-free paper
  • Rigid cardboard
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Flat, sturdy box

Steps:

  1. Protect the surface
Begin by placing the painting face down on a clean, acid-free paper. This step is crucial for protecting the surface from scratches and other damage.
  2. Sandwich securely
Next, sandwich the painting between two pieces of rigid cardboard that are slightly larger than the artwork. This creates a protective layer that helps maintain the integrity of the piece during transit.
  3. Wrap for cushioning
Envelop this ‘sandwich’ in bubble wrap, ensuring all sides are covered. The bubble wrap acts as a cushion against external pressures.
  4. Box it up
Finally, place the wrapped painting in a flat, sturdy box. Fill any empty spaces with additional bubble wrap or packing peanuts to prevent movement. Seal the box with packing tape, ensuring all edges are secure.
