Hey there fellow artists!
One of the most exciting journeys you can embark on as an abstract artist is discovering and developing your own unique voice. It's a process that's as much about self-discovery as it is about honing your craft. I've been on this path myself, and I'd love to share some insights that have helped me along the way.
Experiment fearlessly
Don't be afraid to push boundaries and explore new techniques. Try different brush strokes, layering methods, and color combinations. Embrace happy accidents and learn from them. Remember, every stroke on the canvas is an opportunity for growth.
Find inspiration everywhere
Inspiration can strike at any moment, so keep your eyes and mind open. Look to nature, architecture, music, literature, or even everyday objects for ideas. Take note of what resonates with you and incorporate those elements into your work.
Trust your instincts
Your intuition is a powerful tool in developing your style. Pay attention to what feels right to you and trust your artistic instincts. Don't worry about conforming to trends or pleasing others—create from the heart, and authenticity will shine through.
Experiment with different mediums
While acrylic paints may be your go-to medium, don't limit yourself. Explore mixed media, collage, digital art, or whatever medium speaks to you. Each medium offers unique possibilities for expression and can enrich your artistic journey.
Embrace imperfection
Perfection is overrated! Embrace the quirks, imperfections, and spontaneity that make your art truly yours. Remember, it's the imperfections that give your work character and authenticity.
Stay consistent, but allow for evolution
Developing your style is a journey, not a destination. While it's important to stay true to yourself, don't be afraid to evolve and grow as an artist. Your style may change over time, and that's perfectly okay. Embrace the process of continuous exploration and refinement.
Seek feedback, but trust yourself
Feedback from fellow artists and mentors can be invaluable in helping you refine your style. However, ultimately, trust your own judgment. You know your vision better than anyone else, so don't be swayed by outside opinions if they don't align with your artistic vision.
Practice, practice, practice
Developing your own style takes time and dedication. Set aside regular time for creating art, and don't be discouraged by setbacks or failures. Remember, every brushstroke is a step forward on your journey to finding your unique voice as an artist.
So there you have it—some tips to help you on your quest to develop your own style as an abstract artist. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the process and stay true to yourself. Keep creating, keep exploring, and never stop evolving.
Happy painting!

I’m just dipping my toes so to speak into the beautiful waters of abstract art! Tomorrow I’m using bubble wrap dipped in acrylic paint and pressed onto canvas. We’ll see what develops. Are you on YouTube?
I feel drawn to abstract painting but find it so hard to do. I am going to take an abstract landscape course soon and hope that it will provide me with a framework from which to grow.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.
